Friday – History, Art and Heritage

• Morning:

Guided Tour of the Lascaris War Rooms, Valletta Explore the fascinating underground tunnels and command centre from which the Allied Forces coordinated operations during World War II, including Operation Husky—the invasion of Sicily.

• Afternoon:

Visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta A guided visit to one of Europe’s most magnificent Baroque churches, home to several masterpieces by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. During his stay in Malta, Caravaggio painted The Beheading of St John the Baptist and St Jerome Writing, both preserved within the cathedral. His Maltese period also saw the creation of Sleeping Cupid and Portrait of a Knight of Malta (Fra’ Antonio Martelli), now displayed in Florence’s Palazzo Pitti, and The Portrait of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt with a Page, housed in the Louvre, Paris. Although this was a time of artistic brilliance for Caravaggio, it ended abruptly in 1608 following a violent altercation in which several Knights were wounded, an event that led to his imprisonment in Fort St Angelo and being expelled from the order.

Dinner at the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC)

An evening of Maltese hospitality at the Royal Malta Yacht Club, offering guests the chance to meet local yachtsmen and enjoy dinner overlooking the historic Harbour.

Sunday – The Great Siege & Leisure

• Morning:

Historical Tour of Birgu (Vittoriosa) Visit the fortified city that played a central role in the Great Siege of 1565, when Grand Master Jean Parisot de La Valette and the Knights of St John repelled the Ottoman invasion. Walk through its narrow streets, steeped in history, and enjoy panoramic views of the Grand Harbour.

• Afternoon:

Optional leisure activities:

o Golf at the Marsa Sports Club – 18-hole championship course amid lush Mediterranean scenery.
o Tennis at the Marsa Club – access to premier clay and hard courts for casual play.
o Alternatively, relax in Valletta or enjoy a private harbour cruise.

• Farewell/Evening gathering

Farewell Gathering / Optional Harbour Dinner Cruise
To conclude our visit, members will gather for an informal farewell event. Although we remain flexible with final arrangements, it may be possible to host a dinner aboard a private vessel touring the Grand Harbour, subject to sufficient interest and availability. This would provide a spectacular setting to close the CLYC’s Malta visit.
