This year’s Laying-Up Supper will take place in the beautiful Nelson Rooms on the first floor of the Trafalgar Tavern overlooking the Thames in Greenwich on 13th October.
We are delighted that Peter Sparkes, Chief Executive of the RNLI, will present the awards and make an address to those present.
To propose the toast to the Immortal Memory speech we have Lieutenant Commander Les Chapman CMMar FNI Royal Navy, the twice Past Master of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.
Most Yacht Clubs mark the traditional end of season by holding a celebration dinner and the City Livery Yacht Club’s no is exception. In addition, The CLYC remember a momentous naval battle off the Southwest Coast of Spain 220 years ago and the man whose tactics and leadership won the day for the British. So, it is particularly appropriate that we are holding the event a short distance from the former Naval Hospital.
Built on the site of a long-established tavern, the Trafalgar Tavern opened in 1837 the year of Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne in Greenwich’s heyday. The tavern was taken over as an hotel in 1896 by George Damiral, a former mariner, who also ran a sweet manufactory in the basement! The Trafalgar closed as a tavern in 1915 and had various uses over the next few decades, including as an institute for aged merchant seamen. It was saved from demolition in 1937 by being converted into flats for the Navy and did not reopen as a public house until 1965, when its old interior was gutted and remodelled by craftsmen from Pinewood Studios.
CLYC have made the RNLI the chosen charity for this year’s supper, and so we will be running a raffle to raise money for the RNLI alongside the ability for any attendees to make donations on the evening. The raffle is open now, and you could win either of the following prizes donated by the Commodore:-
- Bottle of Four Seas Gin – created by Salcombe Gin in conjunction with the RNLI, to celebrate 200 years of the RNLI watching over our shores.
- Galileo Thermometer and Storm Bottle – great to have, just in case all your instruments suddenly fail!
Tickets will be £5.00 per ticket or £20.00 for a strip of five tickets, with all funds raised donated to the RNLI. Please contact the Club Secretary to purchase your tickets.
